ADOPTION HOME STUDY IN OHIO

Adoption Home Study Services are provided by A Center for Homestudies and Placement Services to start and understand the adoption process. If you are an Ohio resident, Adoption home study services need to be provided by a licensed adoption agency in Ohio by a certified adoption assessor.  In order to understand adoption opportunities completely, once your home study is completed, we will explain your options to adopt in Ohio or from another State or country, including private, public, domestic and international adoption. We provide adoption services in a timely manner, keeping all information confidential. We work with you to assist you to make the best choices to meet your adoption needs. We assist and advocate for you until you reach your adoption goal.

A Homestudy report is required by the State of Ohio for domestic homestudies, and by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for international adoptions.  The following information will help you understand the process of a homestudy.  A copy of the ODJFS adoption guide may be downloaded from the following address:

WHAT IS A HOMESTUDY?

Married couples or singles who wish to adopt must have a homestudy completed by a certified adoption agency in the State of their residence.  The homestudy must be completed by an adoption assessor, or a social worker licensed to perform adoption homestudies.  The social worker gathers information from families by providing a list of required paperwork, and by interviewing each member of the family residing in the home.  All the information received is thencompiled to form one document, called the Homestudy.  Supporting documents are attached to the homestudy.  The adoption assessor/social worker helps the family through the homestudy process, answering all of their questions, and walking them through every step of the homestudy process.

HOMESTUDY PROCESS

The adoption agency will send you an application and paperwork required to complete a homestudy.  Completing the application is the first step.  The application must be fully completed, signed and dated.  After the adoption agency receives the application, they will review it, and let you know whether the application is accepted or not.  If your application is accepted, you may move to the next step, i.e., Training.

TRAINING:  Ohio requires 24 hours of pre-service adoption and 36 hours for foster care training, which is usually provided by your homestudy agency.  Training gives applicants a good overview of the foster care and adoption issues, and about your agency and it's policies.

PAPERWORK:  Your adoption paperwork can be completed simultaneously, while you are receiving training, as some documents may require time to be processed.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
Generally the following documents are required for a homestudy:
  • Application
  • Fire Inspection
  • Medicals
  • Employment Verification
  • Personal references
  • FBI and BCII checks
  • Child abuse clearance from states you have lived in the past 5 years.
  • Financial statement
  • Pet immunizations
  • Vehicle Insurance proof
  • Water test for well water

Agencies may require some more documentation as well.

HOMESTUDY INTERVIEW

Your adoption assessor will then contact you to interview each member of your family that resides with you for a written report on your family. Once the report is completed, the agency will send you a letter of approval.
